It is little secret that Italian giants Inter Milan are in the market for a new central defender as the Nerazzurri have been linked with a host of talented players in the past few weeks. The latest name on the club’s list however is that of Atletico Madrid centre half Jose Maria Gimenez, according to Il Corriere dello Sport.

The Uruguayan has been a mainstay in the Rojiblanco’s defence for a few seasons now, despite being just 22-years old, but this season his game time has been slightly more sporadic. The youngster has learned his trade under Atleti and Uruguay teammate Diego Godin, who is one of the most talented defenders in world football.

Gimenez is a versatile player capable of playing both as a fullback as well as a centre half, and his exploits have helped Atleti maintain an incredible defensive record season after season. With this in mind it makes sense that he has attracted interest from other big clubs around Europe.

Inter have conceded just nine goals in 12 Serie A game this season, which is the third best rate in the league, but they are now seeking a long term replacement for current star defender Miranda, who turned 33 this year. Gimenez’s contract expires at the end of the season, so Inter may be able to acquire him for a cut price fee.
